Research and documentation
The components are proven. What needs documenting is how they perform together. This page collects studies, pilot results and technical notes as they are published.
Research questions
What a pilot project needs to document
Several of the advantages of an off-grid system are described as potential. They are exactly what the first pilot project is set up to measure.
- 1
Simpler turbine, lower capital cost
How much can the turbine and the installation be simplified when there are no grid compliance requirements, and what does that mean for the capital cost?
- 2
Operating economics
What is the effect on the price of heat and cooling when grid tariffs and electricity tax on the power fall away?
- 3
Energy losses
How do the losses of a turbine driving the heat pump directly compare with the route through the power grid?
- 4
Storage and security of supply
How should heat and cold storage be sized to balance a varying wind against demand that runs around the clock?

Concepts, studies and pilot results
Off-grid wind heat for district heating plants
A wind turbine coupled directly to a heat pump, delivering heat to the district heating network through a heat store, with no connection to the power grid.
Read the conceptOff-grid wind cooling for data centres
The same coupling with the heat pump process reversed, so the wind produces chilled water for data centres and central cooling, without adding load to the grid.
